Welcome to 5th grade!  Glad to have you aboard!  This year we're going to be spending most of our time preparing for Jr. High/Middle School.  This is a time to learn critical thinking, bone up on foundations and explore topics that have merely been introduced in elementary school.

Reading:  This year's reading will be the foundation for our English assignments.  Writing, analysis,  vocabulary and comprehension will all come from our novels. We've also added a spelling section to prepare students for the upper grades. Parents are asked to pick up these paperback books for their children early in the year so that children do not miss out on any assignments.  We'll be reading:

"Redwall" by Brian Jacques, "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell and Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

Math: We'll begin by reviewing multiplication facts as well as division.  Be sure to buy plenty of 3X5 index cards because we'll be building up a math facts library for practicing.  Later, we'll cover in depth long division, money math projects, fractions, measurement and applications in everyday life.  TEXT:  Spectrum Fifth Grade Math

Social Studies this year the first semester is about finding out who each student feels has influenced our world the most.  In this search within themselves as well as in conducting interviews, students will learn what it is to be meaningful.  Term paper skills will also be introduced.  In the second semester, they will first spend their time learning about mythology and then in the bottom half of the semester, will be introduced to chess!  Chess is fast taking over the scholastic world.  Last year at the Chess Olympics, record numbers of people came to play the game, most being children.  You will need to buy the book, "Chess Tactics" by Al Woolum.

Science: Semester 1, we'll cover structure building much like the traveling Odyssey of the Mind teams do.  This is a semester long lesson in architecture, engineering, physics and hands on analysis!  Semester 2, we look at the ancient art of herbology and the many uses of growing and using plants.

Enrichment resources are also listed throughout fro family reading and fun.

To help, here is the official list of books you need to buy for the whole year:

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien,

The McGraw Hill 5th Grade Spectrum Math book,

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

Redwall by Brian Jacques

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Chess Tactics by Al Woolum

Looking forward to this year,

Rev. Treespeaker
