Math: We'll begin by reviewing multiplication facts as well as

building up a math facts library for practicing. Later, we'll cover in

applications in everyday life. TEXT: Spectrum Fifth Grade
Math
Social Studies this year the first semester is
about finding out who each student feels has influenced our world the
most. In this search within themselves as well as in conducting
interviews, students will learn what it is to be meaningful. Term
paper skills will also be introduced. In the second semester, they
will first spend their time learning about mythology and then in the bottom
half of the semester, will be introduced to chess! Chess is fast
taking over the scholastic world. Last year at the Chess Olympics,
record numbers of people came to play the game, most being children.
You will need to buy the book, "Chess Tactics" by Al Woolum.
Science: Semester 1, we'll cover structure building
much like the traveling Odyssey of the Mind teams do. This is a semester
long lesson in architecture, engineering, physics and hands on analysis!
Semester 2, we look at the ancient art of herbology and the many uses of growing
and using plants.
Enrichment resources are also listed throughout fro family
reading and fun.
